more historyNorth West Tasmanians daily newspaper "The Advocate"
Measuring 45" by 23", North West Tasmanians daily newspaper "The Advocate", dated November 22 1920. Quite well preserved, with just a small piece out of one corner, and wear-through on the fold. This is in broad sheet format, that is the whole newspaper is printed on one sheet of paper. Would have been difficult to handle at the breakfast table! News of the day was talk of Western Australia seceding, the newly introduced 44 hour working week, The Kelly Gang was showing at the theatre, and mention of an unnamed Adelaide firm who employed a scantily clad typist. She was told by the manager to "go home and get dressed". She took the advice! Just goes to prove that the overall quality of reporting in Australia hasn't improved in 85 years!

Russian 1934 Communist leader Kirov murder paper. Very good condition. Sergey Kirov, orig.Sergey Mironovich Kostrikov; (1886-1934) Soviet political leader. After joining the Bolsheviks, he extended the Communist Party's control in Transcaucasia, and in 1926 Joseph Stalin appointed him head of the Leningrad party organization (1926). He modernized the city's industries, was elected to the Politburo (1930), and acquired power that nearly rivaled Stalin's. In 1934 he was assassinated by a young party member, Leonid Nikolayev, who was later shot, along with 13 suspected accomplices. Stalin, claiming that a widespread conspiracy of anti-Stalinist communists planned to assassinate the entire Soviet leadership, used the assassination as a pretext to institute the Purge Trials. In 1956 Nikita Khrushchev suggested that Stalin had engineered Kirov's assassination. See Russia.

Scarce Original 1939 "Ham and Eggs" Newspaper
| Vintage political newspaper, National Ham and Eggs, Volume 1, Number 42, September 16, 1939, approximately 11 by 17 inches, 40 pages, in very good condition. This weekly newspaper published in Los Angeles was the communications organ for the "Ham and Eggs" movement that began in southern California as a concoction of popular radio personality Robert Noble to provide the unemployed with old age pension warrants each week. The movement took off when two brothers, Lawrence and Willis Allen, gained control, gathered the required number of signatures, and got a constitutional amendment called "The California Pension Plan" placed on the 1938 California state ballot. The initiative, which would provide $35 in warrants every Thursday to every unemployed Californian over the age of 50, lost by a few thousand votes, but two prominent supporters, Culbert Olson and Sheridan Downey, were elected Governor and U. S. Senator respectively. Because of the closeness of the vote for the initiative, the Allen brothers rallied support and were able to get the governor to call a special election in 1939 for a new vote. It, however, failed again, this time losing by a landslide. This issue of the newspaper includes a copy of the 1939 proposed constitutional amendment plus literally hundreds of brief articles in support. Historically, the Ham and Eggs movement was a successor to "The Townsend Plan" created by Francis Townsend, a Long Beach, California physician, and the "Share the Wealth" movement led by Louisiana Governor Huey Long. Scarce. |
