Cocoanut Grove Fire Newspaper Boston Post Nov 30,1942

Here's and old newspaper from The Boston Post November 30 1942. Reporting on the Fire at the Cocoanut Grove nightclub. Still one of the worst single loss of life's fire in United States history. Total death toll of 492. This paper has the first hand account of stories on the fire, photos from the scene of the disaster and a list of injured and dead. The headline reads "Night Club Death List 447 Boy Admits Starting Fire"  This 12 page newspaper has many articles on the fire with lots of pictures. One article is about a young man from Holy Cross College that lost his life. Boston College football team defeated by the underrated Holy Cross College team 55 - 12 taking Boston College out of the Sugar Bowl and possibly the National Championship. Most of the players from Boston College decided not to attend the Grove party because of the loss. Also at the Grove that night was Western cowboy star Buck Jones on a war bond tour of the country. He dies 2 days later from injuries sustained in the fire.  The condition of the paper is good with some wear around the edge and some discoloring across the top. . Great reading!!!

D-DAY INVASION  PRO GERMAN 1944 WWII

Here is a complete, genuine historic newspaper with the following title, date and description: THE STAR, Guernsey, Channel Islands, June 6, 1944.

* Very rare D-Day report from an original pro Germany newspaper

This is an exceedingly rare opportunity for a significant report not only in a Nazi newspaper, but one in the English language as well. Guernsey is an island in the English Channel, and from 1940 thru 1945 it was occupied by the Nazi forces who controlled the newspaper to be the mouthpiece of Hitler, obviously very biased towards the German cause. Fascinating reading as such. A bit over half of the first column is taken up with a report of D-Day, with headings: "Invasion Begins At 5:30 This Morning" "Germany Will Fight With Her Whole Might" with a dateline of Berlin. The full text is seen in the photos below and includes: "...our enemies in the West have, upon orders from Moscow, started their bloody sacrifice which they have feared for such a long time...we will give them a very warm welcome..." with more.  The balance of this 4 page issue is taken up with other biased reports on WWII plus various local news & ads. Measures about 12 1/2 by 13 inches. Very nice condition and a very rare  unique report.

                              Post-WW2 1947 Manila newspaper

This is a genuine edition of the Daily Pacifican a morning newspaper, from Manila Philippines, dated: Tuesday April 7, 1947. This newspaper was, most likely, written by the US military, as well as being published by them. Here is post-war propaganda at it’s finest. Published during the time when the US had just recently taken the Philippines back from the Japanese Imperial Army. The newspaper is in good shape. The edges are in excellent shape considering how poorly newspaper stands the test of time. The inner part of the newspaper is in fine shape, and completely readable. There is no missing text or any rips or tears on any of the pages. There are articles about a general alert for soldiers in Korea along with some other news on the just completed, total annihilation of the two huge Axis armies by one of the few countries in the world with any thing left standing, the good old U.S.A.

Cleveland Indians Championship Oct. 3, 1948,

1948 World Series Collectors, you may have Cleveland Indians Championship newspapers, but this one probably wasn't saved as much. It is from the Oct. 3, 1948, the day the Indians played (and lost to) the Detroit Tigers in the last game of the season, forcing them into a one-game playoff with Detroit that decided the American League pennant. This sporting and financial news section (16 pages) of the Cleveland Plain Dealer features a half-page photo of the Cleveland Indians team "Who are battling for Cleveland's First Pennant since 1920". An article under the team photo is headlined "Feller to Pitch Title Game Today" "Bob Seeks 20th Triumph; Opposes Newhouser." Inside is a photo of pitcher Gene Bearden relaxing after the previous day's victory over Detroit and a description of that game. There is also a chart of the major league standings and articles of speculation about the pennant race. Page 4C shows a graph of the progress of the race during 1948 with Chief Wahoo and the mascots from Philadelphia and Boston. There is an ad for World Series tickets on 6C. The players in the photo are identified and include Eddie Robinson, Al Rosen, Coach Mel Harder, Manager Lou Boudreau, Bob Lemon, Satchel Paige, Steve Gromek, Bob Feller, etc. This is a neat piece of Cleveland Indians memorabilia in very good condition. Fold marks and yellowing are the only signs of age

                                 DEWEY DEFEATS TRUMAN NEWSPAPER

Chicago Tribune famous issue that erroneously announces Truman's presidential defeat. As we all know, Truman actually won and this is the most famous journalistic mistake of the century. The date is November 3, 1948. The headline reads: "Dewey Defeats Truman" . This is one of the most sought-after papers by collectors because most of the issues were taken off the stands when the Tribune realized its error. Only 2000 were estimated to have reached private hands and most have disappeared since 1948. You will be viewing the front page of the Chicago Daily Tribune Nov. 3, 1948 showing headline DEWEY DEFEATS TRUMAN. This newspaper is complete & has 2 sections. Condition is excellent for the age of this item. This was one of the biggest headline blunders ever printed. In an effort to get the paper on the street quickly they didn't have time to proof read it. The last column on the right side of the front page (2nd paragraph) is printed upside down. We contacted the Chicago Tribune. A member of their staff told us the mistake happened in the First Edition of the paper and was based on early election results that showed Republican candidate Thomas E. Dewey beating President Harry S. Truman. There are no estimates on how many newspapers were printed before the story changed.  Even people who are not remotely knowledgeable about historic newspapers are familiar with this headline! The early edition of this paper printed this famous error, which was changed with the second edition , however several bundles had already been shipped to the Chicago suburbs. It is interesting to note that the typesetters of the Tribune were on strike at the time, so much of this issue was set using a typewriter, giving it its amateur appearance. Some sentences are even pasted in upside down. The edition in the OLDINK collection is of the earlier edition with the type set UPSIDE DOWN

Back in 1948 The Tribune printed 11 editions a day on this day 10 were MISPRINTS OLDINK is proud to have 7 of the 11    Dewey Truman.

"G.O.P. WINS WHITE HOUSE"

Follow-up to the famous "Dewey Defeats Truman" headline...

CHICAGO DAILY TRIBUNE, November 3, 1948  Perhaps the most recognizable headline of the 20th century is that which appeared on the front page of this title and date--but an earlier edition. It read: "DEWEY DEFEATS TRUMAN", made famous by the photo showing Harry S. Truman smiling and holding that famous newspaper. This is the "Final" one star edition printed the very same day but slightly later. The editors saw fit to soften the phrasing a bit, still not aware of the true final outcome of the election, by proclaiming: "G.O.P. WINS WHITE HOUSE" The text in the last column on the ftpg. begins: "Dewey and Warren swept the country in the Presidential election yesterday. The early returns indicated that the Republican ticket had won by an overwhelming majority of electoral votes. President Truman went down to defeat with few states outside of the south..." with more. It is our experience that this edition is much more rare than the more famous one, as we've sold more than 50 issues of  "Dewey Defeats Truman" but this is only the second issue of this edition we have had in 30 years. Complete with both sections, some wear at the edges and the central fold  causing no loss of text (see photos). A very rare companion issue to the more famous headline.  Dewey Truman.

                                      ROBERT STROUD   ALCATRAZ ISLAND

WHAT WE HAVE HERE IS IS TRULY A HOLY GRAIL OF COLLECTING, IT'S AN ORIGINAL, FULLY HANDWRITTEN AND TWICE-SIGNED LETTER FROM NONE OTHER THAN THE "BIRDMAN OF ALCATRAZ" (PRISON), ROBERT STROUD! WRITTEN TO A FRIEND FROM ALCATRAZ ISLAND IN DECEMBER OF 1956! WITH AN AUTHENTICATION LETTER FROM ONE OF THE MOST PROMINENT AUTOGRAPH DEALERS IN THE UNITED STATES! PERFECT CONDITION AND SELLING WELL, WELL BELOW VALUE! CHECK THE PRICE GUIDE ON ROBERT STROUD AND YOU'LL KNOW IT'S TRUE! STROUD ROUTINELY LISTS AT WELL OVER $1,000! AS MANY EBAY BIDDERS MAY ALREADY KNOW, ALCATRAZ island's most famous prisoner was probably Robert Stroud, the so-called "Birdman of Alcatraz." In reality, Stroud never had any birds at Alcatraz, nor was he the grandfatherly person portrayed by Burt Lancaster in the well-known movie. In 1909, Stroud was convicted of manslaughter after killing a bartender in Juneau, Alaska; while serving his prison sentence at the U.S. Penitentiary (USP), McNeil Island, Washington, he viciously attacked another inmate. This resulted in his transfer to USP Leavenworth, Kansas. In 1916, he murdered a Leavenworth guard, was convicted of first-degree murder, and received a death sentence. His mother pleaded for his life and in 1920, President Woodrow Wilson commuted the death sentence to life imprisonment. It was Stroud's violent behavior that earned him time in segregation. During his 30 years at Leavenworth, he developed his interest in birds and eventually wrote two books about canaries and their diseases. Initially, prison officials allowed Stroud's bird studies because it was seen as a constructive use of his time. However, contraband items were often found hidden in the bird cages, and prison officials discovered that equipment Stroud had requested for his "scientific" studies had actually been used to construct a still for "home-brew." Stroud was transferred to Alcatraz in 1942, where he spent the next 17 years (6 years in segregation in "D Block," and 11 years in the prison hospital). In 1959, he was transferred to the Medical Center for Federal prisoners in Springfield, Missouri, where he died on November 21, 1963. THIS GREAT, FULLY HANDWRITTEN LETTER FROM ROBERT STROUD IS SELLING AT NO RESERVE AND WELL BELOW VALUE. THE CONTENT IS SUPER HERE, VERY FRIENDLY PERSONAL CONTENT AND STROUD MENTIONS, "I AM STILL FEELING WONDERFUL, EVEN IF I DO HAVE THE GOUT...SO MUCH BETTER THAN I HAVE FELT IN YEARS..." AND MUCH MORE! STROUD HAS SIGNED THIS LETTER TWICE, AT THE TOP AND AT THE LETTER'S CONCLUSION, AND HAS ADDED HIS ALCATRAZ PRISONER NUMBER WHICH WAS "594".
