He worked as an engineer and director of a technical school in the Ukraine and held local posts in the Communist Party, becoming regional party secretary in 1939. In World War II he was a political commissar in the Red Army and rose to major general (1943). In the 1950s he supported Nikita Khrushchev and becamea member of the Politburo. After Khrushchev's ouster (1964), Brezhnev emerged as general secretary of the party (1966-82) and the dominant leader in the coalition that ousted Khrushchev. He developed the Brezhnev Doctrine, which asserted the right of Soviet intervention in such Warsaw Pact countries as Czechoslovakia (1968). In the 1970s he attempted to normalize relations with the West and to promote détente with the U.S. He was made marshal of the Soviet Union in 1976 and chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet in 1977, becoming the first to hold the leadership of both the party and the state. He greatly expanded the Soviet Union's military-industrial complex, but in so doing he deprived the rest of the Soviet economy. Despite frail health he retained his hold on power to the end.       1989 Germany-- Fall of the BERLIN WALL !

Great 1989 Berlin newspaper : Fall of the BERLIN WALL ! HISTORIC !

Here is an Complete, ABSOLUTELY GENUINE newspaper titled B.Z. from Berlin, West Germany, dated Nov. 10, 1989 A tabloid-size newspaper with large headlines on the front page which translate to: "The Wall Is Gone!" "Berlin Is Again Berlin!" with some photos inside and reactions of the people. Printed in two colors, this is the best issue to have on this historic event--a Berlin newspaper! This issue measures about 12 by 15 1/2 inches and is in great condition. A terrific issue for display!

The Fall of the Berlin Wall 1989

"On the 9th of November, 1989, the Border separating Western from Eastern Germany was effectively opened. The following days were most unusual for the whole of Germany - considering the usual German ways, one could almost speak of anarchy: Shops stayed open as long as they wanted (the usual, mandatory closing time was 6:30pm in 1989), a GDR passport served as a free ticket for public transport, and in general there were more exceptions than rules in those days. Of course, Berlin was in the focal point of these changes. The Fall of the Berlin Wall, which will always be used as a symbol for the end of the Cold War, made the "West" available in the middle of the "East", resulting in widespread chaos. Later - much later - normality took hold again. Later, the bickering started, and later, there was talk of a "wall in the heads". But during the November of 1989, almost everyone was overwhelmed by happiness - a national and emotional exception. The 9th of November was a Thursday in 1989, and I was still at school. But on Friday, I managed to get a seat on a flight to Berlin, and I stayed there for the weekend. I didn't get back before Monday noon, and by that time I had missed a test in History - but what History teacher wouldn't accept the excuse I had? I don't have much of a story to tell (others have done that already); I only want to publish the raw material I've collected. There are about 60 photographs (they can be downloaded in resolutions up to 3072x2048) which I shot on that weekend, and in addition there are over 70 articles from German newspapers (November 13 and 14). Most of the articles are available in their original German and in a translated or at least summarized English version, but some still lack translation  .Berlin Wall.

                                                  Fall of the Soviet Union.

Here is a fascinating pair of newspapers, destined to be the premier newspapers on the coup and collapse of the Soviet Union. Both double-titled: NEZAVISIMAYA GAZETA/INDEPENDENT NEWSPAPER. issue #1: Datelined Moscow & Washington, August, 1991 The Nezavismaya Gazeta defied orders & worked through the night, handing out crude newspaper copies to people on the streets, and faxing their texts to their publisher in Washington who normally published their English edition. Because ther was no time to publish separate Russian & English editions, this issue was published in both languages. Front page photo with red stamp across it reading: "Banned News Dfies Coup", with great text on the events of the coup. Historic reading! Page 5 editorial by the Editor-in-Chief captioned: "At this moment outlawed in the U.S.S.R. 4 a.m. Aug. 20, 1991". Tabloid-size and in near mint condition. Issue #2: Datelined Moscow & Washington, January-February, 1992 In bold red ink across the top is "DEMOCRACY", including a lonely photo of Gorbatchev. This issue printed entirely in English, with terrific reading on the collapse of the Soviet Union. Tabloid-size and in near mint condition. One of the best pair of issues to be had on the fall of the Soviet Union. I've not seen any of these issues on the open market since they were printed ten years ago!
