4/18/1906 SAN FRANCISCO EARTHQUAKE NEWSPAPER ~ Original

AN  Original newspaper published by THE OAKLAND HERALD ~  WEDNESDAY ~ APRIL 18, 1906.  THE OAKLAND HERALD  EXTRA

Written in pencil ~ by the the original owner ~ in the top border of the newspaper above the word OAKLAND is "about noon".

The headlines read:  400 PERSONS KILLED IN SAN FRANCISCO HORROR

The two bylines read:

  1. People of Oakland Be Calm--Danger Has Passed
  2. TALL BUILDINGS FALL CRASHING TO EARTH BURYING MANY INMATES OF HOUSES UNDER DEBRIS

Noon edition since one of the articles just below the headlines starts out:  SAN FRANCISCO, April 18, 11 a.m. The loss of life, as a result of the earthquake, will reach between 300 and 400.

Please see my photos for overall condition.  It does show wear.  It has turned brown with age.  There are splits in the seam where it was folded.

This newspaper has to have been one of the very first published after the quake hit!

It is an original (not a reproduction).

                                    S. F Call Chronicle Examiner Apr 19 1906

An Extremely Important  paper in the Hobby  This paper  published the day after  the Earthquake !!!

Here is the complete, genuine issue of THE CALL--CHRONICLE--EXAMINER newspaper from San Francisco, California, dated April 19, 1906. This is a terrific & very historic newspaper--the very best to be had on this event! Destined to be--if not already--one of the premiere issues of the early 20th century. See the photos below for the great headlines and reports found on the front page. Due to the destruction of the presses in San Francisco, these three separate and competing newspapers combined under one masthead for this issue, printing the paper of this date across the bay on the presses of the Oakland Tribune. This issue is noteworthy in containing no advertisements but rather is replete in its four pages with reports on the earthquake and fire. Plus banner headlines on pages 2, 3 and 4: "At Least 500 Are Dead" "Entire City of San Francisco In Danger of Being Annihilated" "Panic-Stricken People Flee" "Loss Is $200,000" along with many, many large-type one column headlines. Also worth noting is the missing dateline at the top of page 3 as this page is actually the same as the Oakland Tribune edition of April 18--they used it over again for this San Francisco issue. A very rare and unusual find and a significant addition to any newspaper collection--guaranteed genuine. Browning at the central fold and some of the margins, some minimal loss at the spine margin. Terrific for display! . The issue measures about 17 by 22 1/2 inches. Photo is not the best.San Fran Quake

            Addie Joss's no-hitter.

This is a complete and genuine issue of THE CHRISTIAN SCIENCE MONITOR, from Boston, dated April 21, 1910. The photo shows the page 3 report of Addie Joss's no-hitter. Includes a nice illustration of Joss that is nearly identical to his T-206 baseball card. Nice heads and great to have this illustration accompanying the report. The one drawback is that there a line score and not a box score of the game. Issue is browned just a bit at the edges. Unlike many papers from this period, this issue isn't the least bit purplish, which adds to the issue's desirability
